Content vs. Digital Content: How Are They Different?

What is content?

Content usually refers to the collective of words used to communicate an idea or a story.

More finitely, content is akin to a container carrying information, and the information carried is, in turn, distributed across a particular set of media.

What is digital content?

While content can be analog or digital, the digital context of content speaks more to the words and texts used across digital properties, Web platforms, and Internet-based technologies.

For our specific purposes, digital content is:

  • developed by organizations (usually marketing departments at both commercial and nonprofit entities)
  • used to create awareness about brand-specific information as well as for the promotion or sale of products and services
  • intended to inspire users to take a specific course of action across desktop and mobile apps
